Which Filter and Why?
Crystalline's aim is to make choosing a Water Purifier and filter as easy and uncomplicated as possible. Amongst all the various brands and designs there is essentially only 7 types of Water Purifier available on the market today. They are:
Reverse Osmosis
Deioniser (ion-exchanger)
Ceramic
Distillation
Carbon
KDF
Membrane
Crystalline has sold all of these purifiers and filters types since 1989 and are available as portable models or plumbed under-sink systems. The important thing for consumers to know is which type they are buying and what it removes from the water supply; or perhaps more importantly - what it DOESN'T remove.
Based on extensive experience in this industry, Crystalline believe the best three types of Water Purifier and filters for municipal water supplies can be narrowed down to Reverse Osmosis, Distillation and Deioniser (ion-exchange). These are the purifiers which we recommend first and foremost to our customers.
Product Information
Reverse Osmosis
Reverse Osmosis is state-of-the-art water purification technology. It is the same technology used for purification in laboratories, medicine and even converting seawater to drinking water.
Deioniser (ion-exchange)
A deionizer cartridge uses a combination of resin and carbon to remove inorganic chemicals such as fluoride, cyanide and arsenic metals and organic chemicals like chlorine, which improves taste and odour. Depending on your water quality, they will have a service life of approximately 1000 litres of tap water.
With its combination of activated carbon and capillary microfiltration membranes the DuoFlow cartridge offers excellent performance on bacteria, chemical and medical residues reduction and taste and odour improvement. The service life rates up to 5.000 litres of tap water. Failsafe protection ensures the water flow is cut off when the filter life is exhausted so you do not drink unfiltered water.
KDF
Comprises of a combination of patented KDF material and carbon that removes organic substances, as well as heavy metals like the aluminium added to most town water supplies. A long life filter media, which is antibacterial (does not encourage bacteria to grow within the cartridge.) It kills some types of bacteria, fungus and mould. It uses a process called redox reaction. Due to its very long life it's actually the cheapest filter media to run as it can last up to 30,000 litres. Carbon is also included in the cartridge. This media is also used in Shower Filters.

Carbon
This is the most common type of filter. It is excellent for improving taste and odour.
Activated Carbon (charcoal) attracts organic substances to its large surface area. A process called adsorption which condenses gas and holds it to its surface (not the same as absorption). This process removes organic chemicals like chlorine
All types of filters on the market usually incorporate Carbon as part of its process. Activated charcoal impregnated with silver can also kill bacteria on contact. A carbon cartridge holds approx. 350 grams of carbon and lasts up to 5000 litres. A carbon block is also available, including one which has a certified 0.5 micron rating.

Ceramic
A Doulton Sterasyl ceramic filter is a sediment/bacteria pre-filter that can last up to 2-3 years. They are certified and tested to remove 99.9% of many common bacteria. This is a cleanable, re-usable cartridge. A Doulton Ultracarb is a ceramic filter with a carbon core removes bacteria, cysts and dirt. It improves the taste and odour, plus the reduction of chemical, lead and metal contaminates. It is a cleanable, re-usable cartridge. UltraCarb can last up to 12 months before the carbon is exhausted. They are also certified and tested to remove 99.9% of many common bacteria.
